OK, a lot of you guys are waiting for the New Fourth Edition of PTOOMA’s (Lone Wolf) Complete Glock Reference Guide. Over on my site GlockBooks.com, I have a LONG back order list. You guys have been so patient! Because of my personal attention and relationship with the authors, you guys who order on GlockBooks.com will be the first to get the new book.

The word from the publisher is May 23rd. That’s when the book arrives from the printer to Lone Wolf. GlockBooks will have it in-stock shortly after that and I’ll start shipping to my backorder list first. If you order it now, you’ll get the 3rd-edition price, even if the Fourth Edition is more expensive (as has been hinted to me by the publisher.)

JR told me at SHOT that the new book may not include the old torture test, but it will be fully updated with complete information about the Gen4 Glocks and new models. This will be the most up-to-date source of information available anywhere! Even better than GLOCK itself!

I know that ever since SHOT Show I’ve been saying the book would be in by mid-April, but I can’t do anything until the book leaves the printer! Hang tight, it won’t be long now. I know it will be worth waiting for!

Keep on Glockin!

KC Eusebio Named the Newest Member of Team GLOCK Shooting Squad
The World’s Fastest Shooter Aligns with World’s Most Popular Firearm for 2012 Season

Smyrna, GA (April 25, 2012) – GLOCK, Inc. announced Monday that KC Eusebio has joined GLOCK’s shooting team. The three-time World Speed Shooting Champion and former United States Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) team member will continue his quest for a fourth World Speed title as a member of Team GLOCK.

Eusebio will join fellow teammate and renowned junior female shooter Tori Nonaka on Team GLOCK. Like Nonaka, Eusebio was introduced to shooting by his father and began shooting competitively at the age of 8. Quickly, Eusebio rose to Master class in two short years. By the age of 12 he was, and remains, the youngest competitor in the world to earn the ranking as a Grand Master class shooter. At 15, he became the youngest shooter to win a world championship at the prestigious World Speed Shooting Championships Steel Challenge. One of eight competitors ever to earn the USPSA Open National Title, Eusebio also boasts three Steel National Titles.

Upon high school graduation, Eusebio joined the United States Army and was immediately assigned to the USAMU. Honing his skills during his competitive shooting around the globe, his additional assignments included the training of troops in firearms marksmanship, one of the many mandates of the USAMU.

“Growing up, I remember sitting in my father’s garage, using a GLOCK Armorers’ Mat to clean our guns, while surrounded by GLOCK posters on the walls,” said Eusebio. “I was amazed at how impressive they looked, and now here I am, getting to shoot and work for that same, great company. I truly feel blessed to be honored with this opportunity.”

“We were immediately impressed with KC’s skill and abilities that he has perfected during his short career,” stated GLOCK, Inc. Vice President, Gary Fletcher. “He has an extremely energetic personality. Being an accomplished competitor, an experienced leader and a trainer for the USAMU made him a great fit for our organization.”

In addition to joining the GLOCK shooting team, KC also assumes the day-to-day responsibilities as a GLOCK training instructor.

We’ve all heard the stories that GLOCK’s miraculous metal finish is impervious to any corrosive agent. It’s so strong that it’s actually illegal in the United States! Or so the story goes!

Here are the facts:

After some research, I found that one German company owns the various trademarks (Tenifer, Melonite and Tufftride) to a ferritic nitrocarburizing (not to be confused with carbonitriding or just plain carburizing) process widely used in industry to “increase surface hardness, lower coefficient of friction, enhance surface lubricity, improve running wear performance, increase sliding wear resistance, and enhance corrosion resistance,” according to Burlington Engineering Incorporated, a Southern California metal finishing service.

Apparently, Burlington and another company, KC Jones Plating (calling the process “NitroMet”), both use Kolene Corporation equipment and chemicals to apply this finish right here in the USA. Another process called “Nu-Tride” is another word for the exact-same finish exhaustively explained and analyzed on this finishing.com site.

Burlington Engineering states that it is a “leader in the application of quality Melonite* Molten Salt Bath Processing, an environmentally friendly high performance alternative to plating for corrosion resistance industrial rust removal.

Melonite is the most widely-specified process in the world for improving the wear and corrosion properties of metal and metal components. No process can match it for precise, repeatable results; no competitive technology offers two unique combinations of performance, versatility and cost-efficiency.

*Melonite was developed by Degussa Durterrit.”

Although misspelled on the Burlington website, this leads us back to HEF Durferrit, the Mannheim company that developed the process and probably does or did GLOCK’s work. Their website tells us that ”To meet the growing needs with regard to wear and corrosion resistance, as well as the enhancement of the fatigue strength, great efforts were devoted to the development and launching of the TENIFER® process, which is also known worldwide under the trade names of TUFFTRIDE® and MELONITE®. This nitrocarburizing process has undergone continuous development with regard to its regenerability and ecology, and from year-to-year the number of applications is increasing on all 5 continents.”

Elsewhere on the German site we read that “The term nitrocarburizing means an enrichment of the surface layer of ferrous materials with nitrogen and a small amount of carbon. This thermochemical treatment improves the wear resistance and the fatigue strength.

Used with a strongly oxidizing cooling bath – TENIFER®-QPQ – wear and corrosion resistant surfaces with an attractive black appearance are produced.

Products used in nitrocarburizing

TF1 cyanide-free top-up salt for TENIFER® baths*; used for treating ferrous materials. Used only in combination with the REG 1 regenerator. Working temperature 480 – 630°C.

REG 1 environment-friendly, nontoxic regenerator for TF 1 baths

AB 1 oxidative salt for cooling parts treated in TF 1 baths; greatly enhances the corrosion resistance (TENIFER®QPQ process). The well-known traditional Durferrit NS salts are still available*.”

So we may assume that “traditional Durferrit NS salts” were probably the ones that the EPA had a problem with and started the truth-based legend that Tenifer could not be done in the US. Also here we learn that GLOCK probably uses the highest-quality QPQ variant of the Tenifer process. QPQ stands for Quench-Polish-Quench.

The Kolene site describes the QPQ: ”Ferritic Nitrocarburizing is a thermochemical diffusion process which imparts marked resistance to wear, corrosion, and fatigue in ferrous metal components. The optional quench / polish / quench adjunct treatment provides a cosmetically pleasing, black lustrous appearance, as well as a further improvement in corrosion resistance.”

Back on the Burlington site we learn the differences as we go up the scale of quality: ”The following chart demonstrates what properties are best enhanced by varying the Melonite process:

Melonite Processing: Melonite Q

Improved Wear Resistance

Improved Running Properties

Increased Fatigue and Rolling Fatigue Strengths

Heat Resistance

Black Color

Melonite Processing: Melonite QP

lncludes the properties of Melonite Q

Lower coefficient of Friction

Decreased surface roughness

Melonite Processing: Melonite QPQ

lncludes the properties of Melonite Q and QP

Low Light Reflection

Further Decreased Coefficient of Friction

Enhanced Corrosion Resistance (Not suitable for stainless)”

This last note probably explains the well-reported rust problems that Smith and Wesson M&P have had with slide corrosion. GLOCKs also have infrequent rust issues. The discussion on this Metal Finishing forum educates us to the fact that even the exact same finishing process is going to vary according to the details of the particular process. So inconsistancies even within one manufacturer should not be surprising.

Also, the process can be altered by time and chemical density as reported in this very scientific paper entitled: How different steel grades react to a salt bath nitrocarburizing and post-oxidation process: Influence of alloying elements. (Which you can’t read without paying for it, but you can view some cool SEMs like this.)

So there is my official scoop on Tenifer. It is an awesome finish. It is one of the best. It is not perfect, but carefully done, it can be close. GLOCK did not invent it, nor was it the first to use it. GLOCK may have been the first to use it on a firearm, though. The process is not secret, although they’d like to keep it mysterious. Other firearms companies use it, but apparently the cheaper version or inappropriately (on stainless steel, for example). In the past, it may have been prohibited by the US EPA, but now it is commonly applied in the US, even in Southern California, no less.

GLOCK's tough finish has changed its appearance over the years. Here you see the original dull oxide look. This finish can wear and scratch off with no harm to the tenifer under it. Later models are shinier and the glossy prep does not wear off as easily.

Finally, this case is over. Right…..

The weird thing is that Robert, son of Gaston, is suddenly standing up supporting Paul Jannuzzo, the turncoat who stole millions of dollars from the company. This GLOCK and Glock soap opera is sickening.

The idea that if Paul Jannuzzo didn’t actually steal a pistol then everything is OK is crazy. Sure, he saved the company several time from almost certain bankruptcy due to liability claims. Sure, his promotional strategies were awesome. Sure he’s a nice guy and was Gaston’s only friend. But that doesn’t give a guy license to embezzle even a nickel let alone come up with a ballsy plan to pocket millions!

I think Robert is trying to find a way to get the company back and get back at his father for loosing his marbles.

Here’s the report from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

" />

John Disney Daily ReportPaul Jannuzzo, during his trial Wednesday Feb. 22, 2012 in Cobb Superior Court.

Jannuzzo, 56, also was fined $100,000 and ordered to serve 200 hours of community service upon his release. Jannuzzo has already spent 26 months in jail awaiting trial on the theft and racketeering charges, for which he was indicted in 2009. He will be given credit for time served.

A jury convicted Jannuzzo March 2 of conspiring with another former Glock executive, Dunwoody lawyer Peter Manown, to divert about $5 million from the company between 1991 and 2003 using cloned bank accounts, forged documents and fraudulently obtained loans. Jannuzzo also was convicted of stealing a pistol that had been loaned to him by the company.

Glock Inc., the North American subsidiary of the Austria-based gun manufacturer, is headquartered in Smyrna.

Manown, who reportedly profited the most from the partnership, pleaded guilty to three counts of theft in 2008 and was sentenced to 10 years on probation, with no jail time. In exchange for the plea, Manown agreed to cooperate with the investigation.

Defense attorney John Da Grosa Smith asked the judge to take into account Manown’s comparatively light punishment when he sentenced Jannuzzo. He requested only a fine, community service or time on probation as punishment for his client.

Smith also put Jannuzzo’s four siblings and his 80-year-old mother on the stand to testify about how much his family relies on him.

Jannuzzo’s father died in 2009, and the loss of the family patriarch as well as the eldest son has been devastating for the family, said Jannuzzo’s sister, AnnMarie Jannuzzo Mastria.

“The two of them are gone at the same time and it’s hit everyone really hard,” she testified. “My mom has had two heart attacks and she needs him there.”

Jannuzzo, dressed in a jail uniform and bulletproof vest instead of the suit and tie he wore during the trial, wiped away tears as his sister spoke.

Frank R. Seigel, an attorney who was once retained by Jannuzzo to help with Glock product liability cases, testified Jannuzzo was a “brilliant” lawyer. He said Jannuzzo’s peers held him in high regard while he served as the face of the gun industry in America throughout much of the 1990s.

Jannuzzo, a former New Jersey prosecutor, rose to prominence after he was hired by Glock Inc. to be its general counsel, defending the company against product liability lawsuits and patent infringements. He played a pivotal role in representing Glock not just in court, but before U.S. presidents, Congressional leaders and business tycoons. All that crumbled after his arrest, his lawyers argued.

“This man has been ruined,” Smith told the judge prior to sentencing.

Prosecutor John Butters hinted there were really two Paul Jannuzzos — the affable, loving one his friends and family saw, and the conniving, duplicitous employee that jurors heard evidence about. He pointed out that Manown voluntarily came forward in 2003 to Glock executives, admitted he stole from the company, and paid restitution.

In contrast, Jannuzzo has not accepted responsibility nor shown any remorse, Butters said.

Superior Court Judge LaTain Kell had little sympathy for Jannuzzo.

“You were entrusted basically with keys to the kingdom,” Kell told Jannuzzo. “You were given the opportunity to write checks, form corporations on behalf of the company, and take all manners of action on behalf of the company. By placing that amount of trust in you, they allowed you — much to their detriment — to steal from them.”

This is a strange and intriguing video. It is at once kind of cool in a retro sort of way and extremely ridiculous. It must be because it was produced in-house by a couple of GLOCK corporate geeks. It’s hard to believe that PR execs signed off on this unless they are betting that it’s strangeness will set it to go viral. Which may happen….. (thanks to ENDO for alerting me to this video.)

“Perfection for Professionals?” Like Tom Cruise wannabees in a “Spy Kids” rip-off? And I think most any gun will “withstand all extremities,” if you take “extremities” to refer to arms and legs, as it usually does.

There are fake parts in this video and there are real parts. As far as I can tell, the actor is a real athlete with nerves of steel. He base jumps and lays under a tank, among other feats. But the explosions and using the GLOCK as a hammer are really sad forgeries. Even so, it would have been a thousand times more bitchin if Gunny R. Lee Ermy was the star.

Instead of tarnishing GLOCK’s awesome reputation by releasing bizarre Euro-geek shit like this that makes me feel like GLOCK is about as tuned into its market as I understand flower arrangement and lap dogs, they should hire Freddie Wong to make a really awesome fantasy video like this: (starring Gunny, of course!)

If you’re going to make fake stuff, go all the way Wong-style. GLOCK is a big company. Freddie and Brendon work out of a loft in Los Angeles.

It sounds like the same story that you hear when some poor guy finally wins the lottery. He has a couple of great months before the money runs out and then he’s right back where he started only worse. People are not changed by wealth and fortune. If anything, if they can’t handle it, their dark side seems to surface.

This time it’s the story of an aging, socially awkward genius who makes it big, cuts off ties to his family, alienates life-long friends, indulges his peculiarities, and in the mean time becomes the idol of worship for millions of followers. Steve Jobs? Gaston Glock?

My friend Paul Barrett has his finger on the pulse of the GLOCK empire. Read the latest here on Bloomberg Businessweek.

Last December, Helga Glock, Gaston’s wife of 49 years until they divorced earlier in 2011, filed a civil lawsuit in an Austrian court seeking to regain a significant stake in the family-owned corporate empire, which manufactures handguns used by two-thirds of all American police departments. Helga, 71, alleged that her 15 percent piece of the company was improperly shifted from her by advisers to her 82-year-old ex-husband’s new wife, Kathrin Tschikof, 31.

Translated from Kleine Zeitung:

The struggle for power Glocks

Gaston Glock will put much of his life’s work in modern medical research. The family is with him in the dispute over money.

Is there a miracle cure for cancer, which can help the whole human race? For a long time, so we know from his closest personal environment in Carinthia, this question deals Gaston Glock. His long years to reach reportedly deep into Central Asia. The 82-year-old, who earned his pistols with a billion-assets will, in his twilight years not only a considerable part of the Glock’s assets put into health research, but to also expand the range of his business empire business significantly. The Glock Health GmbH has existed as an operational base for it.

“Family care”

The headlines around the multi-billionaire, however, are at present very different nature. His family is with him in the dispute over money. To a lot of money. Between Glock and his former wife, Helga is on after the divorce county court division process, which are of financial and legal details still hot spread in tabloids.

The daughter of Gaston Glock and his two sons have left the weapons business empire.According to reports, they have so signed as a testament, the ex-wife – each with large sums in the tens of millions. In sum amounts haunt of approximately 100 million € for ex-wife and children through the media. “My family,” Glock put this in “News” dry clear, “is supplied. Now I turn to something new.” As just for health research.

Foundations and their purpose

The key conflict broke out in the public lies in the numerous foundations Glocks. Already in September, reported the Kleine Zeitung that were next to the Glock and the Private Foundation Private Foundation value the newly established private foundation and the IGG IGVG private foundation. “For legal reasons,” as William Glock’s lawyer Gößeringer explained. The family dispute is about the foundation’s objectives. The proceeds will be used that is now at the will of the founder Glock mainly for science, research and social projects.

From a family dispute, which is also against the backdrop of this year’s marriage of Glocks out to the much younger wife, Kathrin (30), Glock expects to benefit more than the lawyers. From both sides of the argument, it was about the preservation of the life’s work.Gaston Glock considers it “safe for future generations through the foundations.”

I’m always railing against manual safeties: mechanisms that people ignorantly trust to keep them out of harm’s way. Well here’s one I can stand behind.

Have you noticed that in the past ten years, generic safety pins have become completely useless? Their dull “point” won’t go through fabric. Their cheap alloy won’t hold a coil and therefore they come undone easily. The head comes immediately uncrimped, leaving the hazardous pin ineffective and open to cause injury. If you think about it, safety pins have been emasculated like so many other formerly useful tools of our society.

Well, I’ve located the ultimate safety pin. The veritable GLOCK of safety pins.

At Manhattan Wardrobe Supply, you can pick up an inexpensive gross (144) of any of four sizes of black oxide safety pins. They are sharp, they are strongly sprung, they are securely crimped and made of reliable materials. And they are BLACK. They are not painted, they are blued like a gun, which should provide nice resistance to the elements. It’s not Tenifer, but it’s the next best thing.

A fistful of safety pins should be with you at all times. At the range. In your bug-out bag. If you’re a father, it’s your solemn responsibility to repair swiftly any item broken or torn no matter where you are. These safety pins will help you maintain that ninja-like magic. I got the number 2 and number 3 sizes. Pass ‘em out among your friends and loved ones!

Because of their high quality, these are the only truly SAFE safety pins. There isn’t much more dangerous than a dull, weak and cheaply manufactured safety pin.

“There are millions of NRA members and thousands of certified NRA firearms instructors who continue to protect our Second Amendment rights and help to promote firearms safety,” said GLOCK Vice President, Gary Fletcher. “It’s important for us at GLOCK, Inc. to recognize that commitment by supporting the NRA and its affiliate organizations.”

The four organizations that will be receiving donations at NRA include:

National Rifle Association – This is the third consecutive year that GLOCK will make a $50,000 donation to the NRA. The NRA is America’s foremost defender of Second Amendment rights.
Some of you will remember an episode in American culture in the mid-1980s when Coca-Cola introduced “New Coke.” Falling in market share against Pepsi, Coke executives had the brilliant idea to almost literally shoot themselves and the whole company in the collective foot. Based on secret taste tests, the decades-old formula of Coca-Cola was modified to be a little sweeter and more Pepsi-like. Well America went nuts. Letters and phone calls attacked the company with overwhelming disapproval. Such an uproar was raised that the company switched back to “Classic Coke” three months later.

As an observer at the time, I actually predicted that Coke would switch back to its old formula. When the popularity of Coke bounced back after its return to crush Pepsi for all time, we all wondered if the whole thing could have been one fantastic marketing ploy.

With so much dissatisfaction with GLOCK’s Gen4 marque, could Gaston be thinking along these same lines?

Gun enthusiasts are much like car enthusiasts. They want the best, but they don’t like change. They are cheap, but they don’t like cheap. They are deeply patriotic, but they want their machines to work and to last and to be tough. What the hell are we supposed to do? It’s who we are.

Along comes GLOCK. After a thousand years of selling the same virtually unchanged pistol, they make a couple of inconsequential changes and everyone is up in arms…. or up without arms, as the case may be. Admittedly, the new compound recoil system had some problems at first, but that’s all effortlessly and harmlessly figured out now. The other changes only effect you if you have use for them.

Modular backstraps: I don’t need ‘em, so I don’t care.

Larger and Reversible magazine release: I don’t need it, so I don’t care.

More aggressive texture: I may or may not like it. I haven’t decided yet. I usually put a Hogue sleeve over my GLOCKs anyway.

If anything, I think the SF and RTF models were GLOCK’s New Coke. I think Gen4 is GLOCK’s attempt to bring back Classic.

Are people still whining about Gen4s? Yeah. Read this guy’s tantrum about plastic sights, trigger pull weight and backstrap thickness. All things that are either the first things you change on any gun or inconsequential. I mean bitching about plastic factory sights is like complaining that your new car came with Walmart motor oil in it. You’re gonna change it eventually anyway, right? The Glock trigger pull is kinda like what Glock IS. You’ve got other choices out there. And if you want it different, you can change it for a few bucks. Glock is not going to change it because they have 600 lawyers telling them not to.

Anyway, as far as I know, Gen3s are still available and will be for a long time. And Coca Cola used to have cocaine in it.
