First, let me say thank you for your business and I apologize for taking so long to get to your email. You can imagine that I get a lot of questions, and I answer every one.
I’m glad you are getting training on your Glocks. That is something I always encourage. People buy a gun and they expect to simply know how to operate it. Sure, anyone can pull the trigger, but performing optimally always takes training.
One of the many great characteristics of the Glock design is simplicity. But along with simplicity unfortunately, comes non-distinctness.
I am an enthusiast of old Volkswagens. Before it closed its doors, I was a writer and photographer of featured cars in VW Trends Magazine. Glocks are sort of like old aircooled VWs. If you maintain them correctly, they will last forever. They are very reliable (in stock configuration). They are easy to work on yourself. Parts are (were) available everywhere. And, just like Glocks, they all look alike.
So the question becomes, ‘How do I turn my Plain-Jane Glock into something individualistic while maintaining its legendary reliability, toughness and combat readiness?’
In the old days when my father wanted to make the slightest modification to his 1911, he’d have to drive it to his local gunsmith, or pack it up and send it across the country. Want the trigger lightened? Custom barrel? Heavier recoil spring? Reshaped grip safety? Everything was expensive and time-consuming. The only procedure Dad was willing to do himself was to order hand-carved monogrammed grip scales and screw them on.
As I state on the
Customize Your Glock website, working with your Glock is like building with Legos. Even sitting at the bench at the range, you can change any characteristic of your trigger. You can swap out firing pins, you can exchange barrels and recoil springs. You can swap out every internal part in your Glock as quickly and easily as you can disassemble and reassemble it. All it takes is a bag of parts and a pin punch. For that bag of parts, both factory and third-party, I recommend
Brownell’s,
Lonewolf Distributors and
Custom Glock Racing.
Of course there are various levels of customization. There are still things that you’ve got to send out for on your Glock just like Dad’s old Colt. If you need machining, chrome, blue or NP3 or if you need the grip reduced or angle changed, I recommend
Robar Companies. Robbie, (along with
CCF Raceframes) even offers the
non-Glock Glock build almost entirely from third-party components. Of course there are guys who attempt this level of work themselves, but I’m not one of them.
Of course
Galco is the top of my list for quality gunleather.
So, in the final analysis, you can choose to doll-up your Glock with chrome accents or crayon in the engraving in a few minutes. Or you can give it a kiss and send it away for major surgery. Just remember not to sacrifice The Glockness of your Glock. That is, like your motorcycle must remain a means of reliable transportation, your Glock must remain a reliable weapon. Don’t skimp on your ride or your gat.
Just for the record, I prefer both my VWs and my Glocks stock.
Hope this helps,
Morgan
Morgan: Thank you for the quick response and the offer to sign my book. I am new to shooting Glocks and I am currently taking lessons every Thursday with five other shooters at Midwest Guns in Lyons Illinois. I own several Glocks and I am currently in the market for what I would call the Ultimate Glock. What I am looking for is a complete custom built Glock 17 9MM which would include custom engraving, chrome plating, custom grips, sights, and what ever else can be thought of.
I own several Harley Davidson’s, like my Glocks, but I have one that is a complete custom built bike. So like my Harley’s I am looking for a complete custom built Glock. Lots of flash and style. Of course to back up this pistol I am looking for top of the line leather holster, magazine pouch, belt and carry case. Do you have any suggestions. I appreciate your response and I am looking forward to getting the book.
Sincerely
TR
